On June 20, 2024, the opening ceremony of the International Gurama Festival, organized for the first time in Azerbaijan within the framework of joint cooperation between the Administration of State Historical-Architectural Reserve "Icherisheher" and the Turkic Culture and Heritage Foundation, was held at the Shirvanshahs Palace.

The opening of the festival was attended by the management of the State Historical and Architectural Reserve "Icherisheher" and the Turkic Culture and Heritage Foundation, government officials, deputies, cultural and art figures, as well as Gurama masters from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Türkiye and Kyrgyzstan.

Opening the event with an introductory speech, Chairman of the Management Board of the “Icherisheher” State Historical and Architectural Reserve Shahin Seidzade spoke about the ancient history of the Gurama art, which is one of the traditional art forms of the Turkic peoples. He noted that the department headed by him has been working to preserve the Gurama art since 2020. Shahin Seidzade underlined that the festival is being held internationally for the first time in Azerbaijan this year, and thanked the Turkic Culture and Heritage Foundation for the initiative and support for the transformation of the project into an international format.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the festival president of the Turkic Culture and Heritage Foundation Aktoty Raimkulova noted that the Gurama art, which has both aesthetic and functional values, is a common cultural heritage of the Turkic world.  

She emphasized the spread of this art in the Turkic states under similar names: "This ancient sewing technique in the Turkic countries of Central Asia is called Kurak or Kurok, in TürkiyeKirkyama, in Azerbaijan Gurama. It is our duty to preserve and develop this tradition, combining it with modern motifs.

Aktoty Raimkulova noted that the Turkic Culture and Heritage Foundation invited Guramamasters from Turkic states to the festival.

"I believe that this festival will inspire each of you to further discover, study, preserve and promote Turkic culture", said Aktoty Raimkulova.

Also speaking at the event Deputy of the Milli Majlis and Chairman of the Committee on Culture Fazil Mustafa and Secretary General of the National Commission of the Republic of Azerbaijan for UNESCO Seymur Fataliyev, emphasizing the importance of the festival, preservation and transmission to future generations of the Gurama art, reflecting the ancient heritage of the Turkic world, wished the participants of the festival success.

It should be noted that the International Gurama Festival, which will last until June 22, 2024, will end in the Shusha city.

Within the framework of the festival, an international seminar is held on the importance of Gurama as an environmentally friendly type of applied art, master classes on the Gurama art in various places of Icherisheher, an exhibition of samples of Gurama from the stock collection of the museum center "Icherisheher" and a demonstration of works by local and foreign Gurama masters on Gosha Gala Square.
